The Not So Rare Lunar Eclipse

There will be two -- count 'em -- 2! -- complete lunar eclipses in 2011.  What was so rare about this one was that it occurred on the winter solstice.  But because it's a "worldwide event" I set my alarm for 3am and got up to check it out.  By then the clouds had come in and the sky was overcast entirely (it had been beautifully clear at midnight -- sounds like a good name for a Christmas song, doesn't it!) so what I saw was the suggestion of the moon behind the clouds.  Still, the night wasn't as bright as it would have been on an overcast full moon, so I guess in some way I did experience it --
